On Thursday December 21st at 1:30pm at the Minto Arena a group of amateur hockey players helped kick off the 8th annual Sk8s 4 kids skate collection with the presentation of a cheque for $7,500 and the donation of over 100 pairs of gently used skates. The players, known as “The Jets”, have played recreationally as a part of the Minto Adult Hockey League for the past thirteen years. Local students will be on hand to enjoy pizza, receive their skates and then test them out on the ice with members of the team. Local lawyer and Jets member, Lawrence Greenspon heard about the Sk8s 4 Kids program and mentioned it to the players on his fledgling team. They were soon after collecting funds and skates for the program that is sponsored by local charity, Child & Youth Friendly Ottawa. The Jets are a diverse group of players including a fire fighter, a dentist,a developer, a professor, a few lawyers and businessmen who recognized the need for all kids in Ottawa to have the opportunity to skate on the canal or at the local neighbourhood arena’s and rinks. The Sk8s 4 kids program hopes to collect and distribute 2,000 pairs of gently used skates of the course of the next six weeks. Skates may be dropped of at all Canadian Tire locations, Play it Again Sports, local fire halls and a number of other locations including Mews Chev Olds in Orleans and CTV Television on Merivale Rd. Child & Youth Friendly Ottawa is a local charity that promotes youth leadership, community capacity building and volunteer work. Young people are involved in several annual collection and distribution programs. Most recently the collected and distributed over 2,600 fully equipped back packs to needy children.
